Medios de Cultivo DIY Low Cost
The culture of cell lines requires specialized culture media for their growth. The general components of this type of culture media are: basal medium, fetal bovine serum and signaling compounds. The basal medium contains sugars, amino acids, vitamins and minerals; this part of the culture media costs approximately $20/L. On the other hand, fetal bovine serum costs approximately $900/L; this section of the culture medium contains albumin, buffer, insulin, transferrin, among others. Finally, signal compounds are the most expensive components of the culture medium as they can represent values of up to $500 per milligram depending on the requirements of the cell lines; here are compounds such as growth factors and survival factors for the cell lines.
In many cases, the use of culture media has become unfeasible due to the fact that several projects are based on the growth of a large number of cells to develop a specific product, an example of this is cellular agriculture. Due to this, the development of culture media supplemented with other compounds that allow the growth of cell lines without affecting its composition is proposed.
